About the Author

I grew up in Greensboro, N.C.

I have enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember.
In elementary school, my best friend and I would write articles for our newspaper, The New York Grimes. Although it only had a circulation of two, it may have been the prototype for fake news. It was also in elementary school that I wrote a class play—my first play—about a kid who wanted to learn about the planets.

In junior high, I won the (local) O’Henry Short Story Contest—and a $25 savings bond!
I was on the writing team for my high school senior class play. I wrote a play for my college fraternity (UNC-Chapel Hill). I was on the teams that wrote plays for my medical school class (UNC-Chapel Hill) and residency (University of MD/Union Memorial Hospital-Baltimore.).
Married life and work (Emergency Medicine) took the front seat until 2005 when I wrote a very long version of the play that would become the full-length Dreams of Women Dancing. Since then, I have written a total of forty plays, mostly 10-minute plays and one-acts. Nine of them have had productions in the US and Australia. Two are published.
I retired in 2016. Covid came in 2020 and with it the desire to find outdoor distancing activities. The bike riding and flyfishing I was doing took on new importance and an increased part of my life. I found myself in and around the Gunpowder River more and more. And the more time I spent there, the more I came to understand the region’s rich and interesting history. It was at this time that the idea for this book came to me.
The stories have been a joy to research and write. They have reconnected me with my youth and the joy of writing.
Besides fishing and biking, I enjoy travel and woodworking.
I live in Baltimore with my wife.
